As an audience watching this video, I find that it does highlight the awareness of anorexia. It gives me information on the disorder and what happens when you are anorexic.
I do think that the style of the video could a bit better, however it all flows well with the soundtrack and provides a deep emotional connection towards the victims of anorexia.

The film was a good length for what you are trying to show. It was short but emotional and meaningful.
Some of the shots could have been more clear and had more lighting.

For my final major project I chose to do a Social Community video to highlight awareness in teenage Anorexia Nervosa. To make the film have a more personal look, I decided that I would get real life anorexics to send me a video of them saying a line that I would give them that gives either facts/figures or a symptom of Anorexia.
In my awareness video, I was hoping to open people’s eyes about Anorexia Nervosa to show that it doesn’t just about want to look like a model from a magazine. I wanted to show that it is a real life illness that can absolutely destroy lives of those with it and those around it. 

My client was B-EAT, which is a local charity for Eating Disorders. They specialize on all sorts of disordered eating like Anorexia, Bulimia and Binge eating. I didn’t want to expand so much into every kind of disorder so I chose to do Anorexia, as it’s a more personal issue for me. I then thought I should narrow it down even more and highlight one subject, Anorexia Nervosa in Teenagers. I researched into B-EAT’s website and noticed they have a page especially for teenagers. They didn’t have much information on the topic and how it truly feels for someone to be suffering, so I emailed them and proposed my idea, to which they agreed too.

My idea meant relying on a lot of people, which was risky. If no one stuck to sending me a video then I wouldn’t of been able to achieve it. This was proven as It took me a while to finally gather up enough videos from different people, because of this I did fall behind on editing and my work was piling up. I have put a sequence that I filmed myself of a girl who is showing signs of body dysmorphic disorder, which is a symptom, and cause of Anorexia Nervosa. This sequence, although a very easy process, still proved to be a problem. I had multiple times of filming the sequence as my footage would delete itself or not play. In the end I managed to get the sequence together at last minute, although I am not happy about the angles and lighting of it.
If I could do this film again, I would allow myself more time and management to complete it the way I had planned it to look. The sequence footage would be a lot more clear and better lighting. I would also try and gather more emotion than I did, as I find the film was a little too dry. I would also supply more facts and statistics on the disorder to try and make it more understood and looked upon. My final disapproval was the outcome of how my film was shaped. As I had asked fellow teenager anorexics to send me videos of them saying a line, pretty much all of them recorded it on their mobile. This caused a very thin rectangle shape to the film, which I didn’t want.

However, the things I thought went well were my music choice. I find that the soundtrack goes well with the awareness, as it’s slow and quiet. The pace of the soundtrack really fits in with the pace of the film. I also find that the connection you get with the teenagers works well. They stare directly at the camera as if they are giving you eye contact whilst saying their line, giving you an emotional connection towards them.

Overall I didn’t think I completely achieved my aim.  If I did it again, I would choose to do a lot more research and practice. I would also maybe follow down a different route and interview the Anorexics myself so the films style is all the same. However, I find that even though I am not entirely happy with the end product, I think that the aim of awareness, which is my initial thought, has been highlighted and shown through the film.

Contingency Plan

For my back up idea I decided I would make a cooperate promotional video instead. It would be of my own Father's business that he runs with a few others, it's called Stratus Hosting which is a desktop cloud software for companies to buy.

To promote the business I would have interviews with my Dad and his partner of the company, both of which explaining their product and what the positives you get from having it.
I would also have fellow businesses that have purchased the said product to tell me their views on it.

I would also have sequences of the software being used to you can see what it looks like and what it is for.

Targets for today is to find more facts and statistics on Anorexia and add them too my footage

Dieting and weight control strategies reflect how dissatisfied an individual is with her or his own body size and shape. Besides being associated with the onset of eating disorders, these behaviors alone can be dangerous to one’s health.
  • 42% of 1st-3rd grade girls want to be thinner (Collins, 1991).
  • In elementary school fewer than 25% of girls diet regularly. Yet those who do know what dieting involves and can talk about calorie restriction and food choices for weight loss fairly effectively (Smolak, 2011; Wertheim et al., 2009).
  • 81% of 10 year olds are afraid of being fat (Mellin et al., 1991).
  • 46% of 9-11 year-olds are “sometimes” or “very often” on diets, and 82% of their families are “sometimes” or “very often” on diets (Gustafson-Larson & Terry, 1992).
  • Over one-half of teenage girls and nearly one-third of teenage boys use unhealthy weight control behaviors such as skipping meals, fasting, smoking cigarettes, vomiting, and taking laxatives (Neumark-Sztainer, 2005).
  • 35-57% of adolescent girls engage in crash dieting, fasting, self-induced vomiting, diet pills, or laxatives. Overweight girls are more likely than normal weight girls to engage in such extreme dieting (Boutelle, Neumark-Sztainer, Story, &Resnick, 2002; Neumark-Sztainer&Hannan, 2001; Wertheim et al., 2009).
  • Even among clearly non-overweight girls, over 1/3 report dieting (Wertheim et al., 2009).
  • Girls who diet frequently are 12 times as likely to binge as girls who don’t diet (Neumark-Sztainer, 2005).
  • The average American woman is 5’4” tall and weighs 165 pounds. The average Miss America winner is 5’7” and weighs 121 pounds (Martin, 2010).
  • The average BMI of Miss America winners has decreased from around 22 in the 1920s to 16.9 in the 2000s. The World Health Organization classifies a normal BMI as falling between 18.5 and 24.9 (Martin, 2010).
  • 95% of all dieters will regain their lost weight in 1-5 years (Grodstein, Levine, Spencer, Colditz, &Stampfer, 1996; Neumark-Sztainer, Haines, Wall, & Eisenberg, 2007).
  • 35% of “normal dieters” progress to pathological dieting. Of those, 20-25% progress to partial or full-syndrome eating disorders (Shisslak, Crago, & Estes, 1995).
  • Of American, elementary school girls who read magazines, 69% say that the pictures influence their concept of the ideal body shape. 47% say the pictures make them want to lose weight (Martin, 2010).
Health Consequences, Including Mortality
In anorexia nervosa’s cycle of self-starvation, the body is denied the essential nutrients itneeds to function normally. Thus, the body is forced to slow down all of its processes toconserve energy, resulting in:
  • Abnormally slow heart rate and low blood pressure, which mean that the heart muscle is changing. The risk for heart failure rises as the heart rate and blood pressurelevels sink lower and lower.
  • Reduction of bone density (osteoporosis), which results in dry, brittle bones.
  • Muscle loss and weakness.
  • Severe dehydration, which can result in kidney failure.
  • Fainting, fatigue, and overall weakness.
  • Dry hair and skin; hair loss is common.
  • Growth of a downy layer of hair—called lanugo—all over the body, including the face, inan effort to keep the body warm.
A review of nearly fifty years of research confirms that anorexia nervosa has the highest mortality rate of any psychiatric disorder (Arcelus, Mitchell, Wales, & Nielsen, 2011).
For females between fifteen to twenty-four years old who suffer from anorexia nervosa, themortality rate associated with the illness is twelve times higher than the death rate of allother causes of death (Sullivan, 1995).

GENRE (SOCIAL ACTION MEDIA AND COMMUNITY):
My chosen genre is Social Actions and Community. Social action and community media uses media as a creative tool to increase public knowledge and awareness and sets out to analyse current social issues and problems and bring to public attention. This type of media gives an informative view on some situations in society and uses the community to voice their opinions so the media is more persuasive. This type of media is most commonly used to show awareness for charities, such as RSPCA when they produce videos of animals being badly treated and ask for your help. They do this to pull at your heartstrings and inform you what is happening in society.

IDEA:
For my project, I have chosen to do a social action and community film for the charity BEAT to raise the awareness of anorexia in teenagers. I want to produce a 3-minute film to provide information such as facts and statistics on anorexia. I will also have real life anorexics voicing a con of anorexia. To break up the clips, I’ll be filming a sequence of a girl with anorexia, touching and squeezing parts of her body, crying and clenching at the fact she finds herself fat. She stands in front of the mirror, staring at herself, touching the parts she hates.

TARGET AUDIENCE:
My target audience will be for those who are either worried about their child having anorexia and need information, or those who are interested in helping those with it. It also is aimed at teenagers that are worried about having anorexia and want to know the signs or statistics of it.

VISUAL STYLE AND TECHNIQUES:
I want it to be visually dark lighting, to keep it with the darkness of the illness. The sequence that I will be filming will be in that style. It will be dark and sharp, but with a blurred translation between each part of the body. The clips of the real anorexics stating the cons and facts of the illness will of course break up the sequence. The clips will visually be them filming themselves, this way it will come off as more personal and meaningful.

DISTRIBUTION AND FEEDBACK:
I would like my film to be distributed on the BEATS website. As it will be a 3-minute max film, this fits perfectly with their site. People are welcome to contact beat and leave comments on their site to give feedback from the film.

23rd January 2014 - TASK 2 Idea Creation


Take 2 – Idea Creation

1.     City College Norwich: My idea for a Corporate Promotion for City College Norwich is for all the Creative Arts departments. I’d show what we have to offer within the department and what supplies we have. I’d go from each course to speak with the students and tutors for their views, opinions and experiences with the course. I will be making the Promotional film for City College Norwich that they could show at special events such as Open Days. My potential target audience would be future students looking to join one of the Creative Arts courses and show them each ones qualities and what the courses are about. It will also let them see other present students opinions on the course.

2.     Social Action and Community: My idea for a Social Action and Community media film would be for a charity group called BEAT.  This charity provides helps for those who suffer from an eating disorder of any kind. I want to specialize my film for those who suffer from Anorexia by showing the form of body dysmorphia that comes with it. I also would film real life anorexics stating one sentence about anorexia. This will be a short film and more website based. If not it would be easy to extend to a DVD type film. It will be aimed at those who either suffers from anorexia or for families and friends who know someone with anorexia. It is also to show awareness in the illness and give more of a sense of how dangerous it is.

3.     Company Product/Service: My idea for a Corporate Promotion for a company product would be for the independent business called Stratus Hosting. It’s a software product so I would show demonstrations of the product and the benefits of using it. This would be aimed at mainly businesses’ as it’s more a server software. It would be a short film so it would be useable for the Stratus Hosting’s website.

Task 1 – Initial Research

Production Manager:

A production manager is involved with the planning, coordination and control of manufacturing processes. They ensure that goods and services are produced efficiently and that the correct amount is produced at the right cost and level of quality.
The scope of the job depends on the nature of the production system: jobbing, mass, process, or batch production. Many companies are involved in several types of production, adding to the complexity of the job. Most production managers are responsible for both human and material resources.
The job role is also referred to as operations manager.
Typical work activities
The exact nature of the work will depend on the size of the employing organisation. However, tasks typically involve:
  • Overseeing the production process, drawing up a production schedule;
  • Ensuring that the production is cost effective;
  • Making sure that products are produced on time and are of good quality;
  • Working out the human and material resources needed;
  • Drafting a timescale for the job;
  • Estimating costs and setting the quality standards;
  • Monitoring the production processes and adjusting schedules as needed;
  • Being responsible for the selection and maintenance of equipment;
  • Monitoring product standards and implementing quality-control programmes;
  • Liaising among different departments, e.g. suppliers, managers;
  • Working with managers to implement the company's policies and goals;
  • Ensuring that health and safety guidelines are followed;
  • Supervising and motivating a team of workers;
  • Reviewing worker performance;
  • Identifying training needs.

Codes and Conventions in Corporate and Promotional Programming

In this blog post I am going to explain the codes and conventions of corporate and promotional programs, in doing this I will provide examples of existing ones. I will also explain the formats used, also the equipment and varieties of techniques used. I will then explain the legal and ethical issues, which relate to this form of programming. 

A corporate video is a video, which is commissioned by a business to portray a certain message to internal or external stakeholders, and potential and existing customers, it also attracts audiences. An organization intends the video to be viewed by their target audience and is made to suit what their audience wants to see. They always have a function, purpose and targeted audience. For the programed to be effective they should contain information that would entertain audiences yet also inform them. The main reasons why these videos are produced are to provide information, promotion, health and safety standards and staff training videos. Due to an increase in convergence technology, corporate videos are used by companies on their websites, YouTube, social networking. 


The codes and conventions used are dependent on the function of the video and the audience the video has been made for. The codes and conventions that have been used by the filmmaker have to reflect the brand identity of the corporation it is being made for, e.g. Apple.


Here are some of the codes and conventions you would need:


Voice Over - This guides the audience through a narrative and will explain to the audience of what is included in the video. The person in the voice over would speak with range and depth so that it sounds professional and so the audience listens.  


Company Logo - the company is usually at the beginning and end of the video, this is so the audience will refer to the company with the logo and recognize the company.


Presenter - there would be one in the video to provide information. They would dress smart and make the audience listen. 


Titles - these are used when someone is on screen talking e.g. interviews, this will tell the audience who they are and what part of the business they are in, they also break up the video.


Selling Point - the video will focus on a selling point of the product, the points make the product a better competitor to other products that are similar.


Cutaways  - these are short shots, which are related to the narrative, with the voice over playing over the top in time, helping explain visually and give the information more effectively to the audience. The cutaways can be a variety of shots; e.g. close ups of objects, tracking shots and establishing shots.


Interviews - they are used a lot in these types of videos, they provide the audience with professional opinions bettering their knowledge of a project, interviews are also included to make the audience more interested in the product and keep watching the video. 


Music - this is used to set a tone and grasp the audience. The music is quiet so you can hear people talking clearly in interviews and is played on a loop.


Graphics - these can be used for the main titles, to make it eye catching to the viewer. 


Video and audio transitions - these are used so the editing will flow easily and so it doesn't cut back and forth so snappy. 


Language/script - this is written so it introduced the business/product to the audience as if the audience has no idea what the business/product is, this is so anyone who watches it will have a knowledge of the business/product.

Social Action Media

Social action media uses media as a creative tool to increase public knowledge and awareness and sets out to analyse current social issues and problems and bring to public attention. Essentially, it encourages people to action in response to what they have seen on heard. Community media provides a vital alternative to the profit-oriented agenda of corporate media. Social objectives rather than the private, profit motive drive them. They empower people rather than treat them as passive consumers, and they nurture local knowledge rather than replace it with standard solutions. Ownership and control of community media is rooted in, and responsible to, the communities they serve and they are committed to human rights, social justice, the environment and sustainable approaches to development. Social action and community media is key to creating a strong, socially responsible civil society.
